Excerpt from Chapter 13, “Going to the Root of the Problem” (from the book “God’s Answer For America”)

What Has Held Us Back?

The soul-changing move of God our nation so desperately needs will only come when God’s leaders and people cooperate with Him. But exactly how? Many have been praying according to 2 Chronicles 7:14.

“If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” —2 Chronicles 7:14

But why have things not really changed yet? Is God asking for something
more? What has held us back?

Why Have We Not Seen a Great Reformation?
For years, many in the church have been praying for a Great Awakening and speaking of the need for a great reformation in every sphere that influences our society. These are known as the seven mountains: religion, family, education, government, business and finance, media, and arts and entertainment. And as salt and light we should be greatly influencing all these areas.
However, in spite of many great efforts and some positive results, overall it seems the American church has instead become more influenced and conformed to the culture and things in our nation continue to spiral downward. Why? We believe the following vision provides revealing insight as to exactly what has kept God’s people from advancing into the promised land and truly impacting our nation in every area of society (the seven mountains).

Spring 2006 vision through Cindy deVille
While viewing a Christian program with several well-known ministers and prophetic people speaking about the seven mountains of society and possible strategies to reform them, I heard the Lord say:

“They’re not ready yet.”

After I heard this I had the following vision:
I saw a mighty Warrior; He was very big and tall and fully dressed and ready for battle (like in Braveheart). I didn’t see His face as I was standing slightly behind Him and off to His right. He was looking with anticipation at a great land that stood before Him and His people.

This Warrior represented Christ, and He was ready to lead His army, His people, into the Promised Land. He said that everything He had promised His people was standing before them and that He longed to fulfill every plan, every dream, every promise that He had placed in their hearts, beyond what they even imagined. It was as though He couldn’t wait to show them all He had in store. There was a great zeal that seemed to consume and radiate from Him. He then turned His head and looked over His shoulder to His people and shouted:

He was fully set to move quickly forward; but then, for a moment it was as though my eyes and my heart became His, and I saw what He saw and felt what He felt. It was heartbreaking and almost unbelievable. It’s as though He was saying:

“Cindy, Look what they are doing.”

Instead of His people standing with Him ready to go forward into battle, they all had their backs turned to Him. They were about ten feet away and all crouched down towards the ground. Each person had their arms wrapped around something, holding it close and affectionately, as if they loved it.

At first I couldn’t tell what they were embracing, but God allowed me to see that they were “idols”—other lovers, sins, things of this world they loved more than God: wealth, status, pleasures, possessions, fame, success, the praise of man, the things of the world and of the flesh. They had turned away from their first love and were embracing idols.
Anything we exalt above Christ is considered an idol (idolatry).

The Second Root Problem
Remember in chapter 6, “The State of the American Church,” we shared about leaving our first love for other lovers and being lured away by the distractions and pleasures of the day. This vision reveals how these have held us back.

So we see that the heart and soul (spiritual and moral condition) of the nation is not the only root problem; but the very vessel God would use to be salt and light and be the agent of change and reform is also the problem. And until the American church changes, America will not change her course.

It’s really important we understand this. We can fight and pray for change and the reformation of our nation all day long; but if many of the leaders in God’s house and many of God’s people are living in compromise, idolatry, disobedience, unrepentant sin, and not praying, we will not be able to change the nation.

We (the American church) actually are part of the problem! If we want to see radical change in our nation, we must first see radical change in our churches. Many in the church are telling the government, Hollywood, and the rest of America, “You are the problem; you need to clean up your act; you need to repent”; but God is pointing to the American church saying,

“Church, YOU are the problem; YOU need to clean up your act; YOU need to repent, first!” Much of the church right now can’t take a stand for righteousness in our land because they themselves are living in hidden sin and unrighteousness. Is it any wonder why the world looks at the current state of the American church and laughs at our calls for righteous change in our nation?

It’s Time for Radical Change
There must be a strong call for real repentance and a radical reformation in the church. What we need is a holy visitation from heaven—a cleansing and purifying fire that will hit our pulpits and send ripple effects throughout the pews and out into the city streets and to the multitudes! We believe God’s Answer shows exactly HOW to do this!
